Academic Survival Skills:


1. Listen actively
-Focus your attention
-Ask questions if you don't understand something
-Write down main points

2. Get involved in class discussions
-Be prepared. Complete reading assignments before class.
-Ask questions.

3. Take good notes
-Don't write down everything. Summarize what's been said in your own words.
-Review your notes after class. This helps keep the information fresh in your mind.

4. Become a better reader
-Preview the section: read chapter title and introduction.
-After every few paragraphs, summarize. Pause and state main points and details in your own words.
-Look up words you don't know.
-Make notes with any questions you may have.

5. Use your time well and stay organized!
-Use a planner (or stickies) to keep track of your homework each night.
-Choose a quiet place to study.
-Plan when you will get your homework done each night. It may work best to do your homework as soon as you get home!
